BRIAN (18-19): Caucasian - clear tenor G/A flat - Absolutely sincere. He is “white,” solidly
middle-class, even a bit upper. He is honest, quizzical and while he is not naïve, appears that
way. He learns very quickly and reacts sincerely to strong emotional responses and queries.
He wants to be a good person in a tough world, but is only just gathering
all the “ingredients.” He has made a choice to be at the center without fully
realizing the consequences of his decision. His honesty and goodwill, though
sorely tested, are what ultimately keep him there.
PERRY (25-27): Italian - baritenor to F,F# -
had serious domestic abuse, as well as cocaine and heroin
addiction. One suicide attempt. He’s now a leader of the group, a “big brother.” He’s pretty together and
not much fazes him. He’s proud of his Italian heritage. He’s a “hot-head,”
but underneath the tough exterior is an organized and understanding individual,
though quite guileless in his dealings with others.
JEROME (25-30): African American - big, flexible voice - is a big
(i.e. imposing), Black guy. He’s a fighter and is HIV positive. He lives with
his mother and has a profound relationship with Jesus. A tough exterior conceals
a fragile heart. Fastidious and caring, he has done gang time and jail time
and believes that no matter what someone has done, they can be “saved.”
AARON (19-21): Caucasian - baritenor E-F#
- extremely bright, gay, well educated and manic-depressive.
He’s compulsively neat and quite hard on himself. He never feels he’s reaching his full potential.
He’s a “poet” and is haunted by nineteenth century-style ruminations of death,
being and purpose. He is definitely not a “drama queen,” but he is “romance”
personified.
JOHN (21-22): African American - tenor to A - A fine looking African American male. He’s a ladies
man of the first order. His insecurities become more acute if he feels the
“women” are not paying attention.
GILBERT/MIKE (25-28): ethnic - tenor to A -
Slight, dark complexion,
perhaps of Indian extraction, Gilbert has a great sense of humor and is a
bit quirky. Mike is tough, but sensitive and cannot forgive himself for the
mistakes of the past.
LANDON/LUCA (20-21): Caucasian (dancer) pretty boy/boy band - tenor to A - Hot stud boy, hangs around, not as committed as the others, but needs this place. He’s a runaway and had been a street hustler. Luca has kicked all the bad habits and “dances” at gay clubs. He’s very good at this and knows it. He’s a performer in every sense of the word and loves the attention. Knows
how to work it!
VERONICA (23-25): Latina - high belt mix to F - A striking Latino woman. Veronica
is not her real name. She longs to be a model, but doesn’t admit it, and is
obsessed with fashion and pop magazines. She’s still fighting a serious eating
disorder. She is skilled at training people to work at the center, and is
a shrewd judge of character.
SHAWNA (35-40): African American - high belt to C# - African American “earth mother!”
She has seen it all, and is entirely content with herself. She will offer
a hug and a criticism in equal measure. She believes in the power of the Lord,
but also believes in the power of herself.
MISTY (18-20): Caucasian - husky alto belt to B/C
- a wisp of a thing,
very pretty, a street “Lolita.” She lived in the car with her transient family
and then ran away. She craves a “home.” Has shaken a bad drug habit and is
only inches away from falling back into the “fix.” This is because of her
association with influences outside the center.
NATASHA: (20-21): Russian - alto belt to B/C#
- has a particular
“attitude” about everything, which makes her critical of others, but mostly
herself. She is a good listener, street smart and is wary of the “truth.”
KAIT (20-21): Asian - high or alto belt - She carries a battered, portable tape-recorder with her, with
an answering machine cassette in it. It has a recording of a phone message
from her grandmother. Kait is sweet, gullible, but will listen to your troubles
forever.
INTERVIEWER (28-35): She’s a “cool” individual, and is trying
to maintain a certain distance from the interviewee in order to obtain the
most honest, spontaneous response. There is a measured quality about her demeanor,
which perhaps hides more emotional feelings, as a result of this experience.
CAMERAPERSON (22-30): A technical guy, or girl, who serves as the “eyes” for
the live, onstage monitors. There is a clear camaraderie with the Interviewer.
